Life is unpredictable, and accidents happen! No matter if you are sitting at home or roaming on the roads, a mishap can occur anytime, anywhere. However, if you are at home, you can use a first aid kit for immediate treatment of the ailments, and the injuries occurred.
As the name suggests, first aid is the initial help extended to an injured person until provided with complete medical care. First aid makes a significant difference if done correctly. It assures that the injured person gets a speedy recovery with the least damage. You should have at least one first-aid box in your home and one in your car. Keep the box someplace comfortable to reach and away from young kids. However, ensure your elder children know the significance of a first-aid kit and know where it is kept so that they can use it in an emergency.
You can buy a first-aid kit at any drugstore or even assemble your own. Here’s a list of first-aid kit must-haves to keep at home-
THERMOMETER AND MEDICINE FOR FEVER:
One of the most common ailments faced by us is a fever. Hence, it is imperative to include a thermometer in your first-aid kit. You should even keep cold & cough medicines along with it.
When you get a cut or wound, cleaning it with fresh water and putting antiseptic lotion/cream on it is the first step. An antiseptic lotion kills the germs and avoids the formation of pus in your wound.
When a cut or wound is left open, it is exposed to dirt and dust, making it prone to catch an infection. Therefore, placing an adhesive tape on the wound after cleaning it is essential. These tapes are available in different sizes and shapes.
A pair of tweezers comes handy for several purposes, including extracting thorns, insect stingers, splinters, and ticks. Note- use tweezers with caution and don’t forget to sterilize them before keeping them back in the box after use.
A good pair of scissors has several uses, from trimming gauze pads to cutting lengths of medical tape. Invest in a pair of small curved medical scissors as they are safer and more comfortable than regular scissors.
TAPE AND STERILE GAUZE PADS:
Gauze pads can be used to stop heavy bleeding or to cover a larger wonder/cut. Start by cleaning the wound, applying the antiseptic and using the tape to keep the gauze in place. This is good for kids as they won’t be able to do away with it easily.
Keep necessary painkillers in your first-aid box as they can come handy in a lot of situations. They are used to treat minor pains and aches due to different conditions such as headache, toothache, muscle aches, or menstrual cramps.
MUSCLE PAIN SPRAY OR TUBE:
Muscle strain is a common problem we face in our daily life. Use the spray with a heating pad for instant relief. However, you should use these sprays in moderation as they get absorbed in your bloodstream directly.
Gloves are used to protect both the injured and the person administrating to stay at bay from bacteria and other harmful microbes. Always use gloves to clean up a wounded area.
Allergies are common these days. Many people are allergic to some food items, pets, flowers, dust, pollution, and the list goes on. Hence, it is ideal for keeping allergy medicines for such situations.
Apart from the things mentioned above, other essential items for your first-aid kit are- instant cold packs, cotton balls, duct tape, petroleum jelly, safety pins, hand sanitizer, eyewash solution, surgical mask, first-aid manual, etc. Stock these items and don’t forget to clean and re-stock the medicines every month. After giving the first-aid, if the condition of the injured doesn’t betters, then you should immediately rush to the hospital. If you are insured with a health insurance policy, then you can enjoy cashless benefit at network hospitals. A health insurance policy acts as a financial cushion and a saviour during such urgent situations.
